DENTAL MATERIALS
Thanks to advances in modern dental materials and techniques, dentists and
patients today have several choices when it comes to selecting materials
to repair missing, worn, damaged or decayed teeth.
These new materials have not eliminated the usefulness of more traditional
dental materials, such as gold, base metal alloys and dental amalgam. That’s
because the strength and durability of traditional dental materials continue
to make them useful for situations, such as fillings in the back teeth where
chewing forces are greatest.
SAFETY: HYGIENE & STERILIZATION
In health care, dentistry has long been at the forefront of the development
of new products and procedures that reduce the potential for disease transmission.
Much of this is achieved through sterilization. Sterilization is the destruction
of all living micro-organisms, including spores (reproductive bodies) of
the hardiest bacteria and fungi.
Many of the instruments used in dentistry need to be sterilized. The instruments
that contact teeth in drilling and polishing are either sterilized or discarded
between patients.
On City Dental Clinic we apply all principles of universal precautions and
the highest standards of protection are always applied.
Basic hygiene remains always important. Experts in medicine and dental infection
control agree: Handwashing is the single most important element in preventing
the spread of infection. Our dentists and staff always wash their hands immediately
before donning gloves as well as immediately after removing them.
Practicing universal precautions means also that our dentists and staff
wear a new pair of rubber or vinyl gloves for each patient and wear face
masks and protective eyewear for all procedures that generate spatter or
splash.
Injection needles are no longer reused because they pose a high risk of
spreading viruses.
All our instruments used on patients are either disposed of or are properly cleaned, then disinfected or sterilized after use. Heat-sterilizing instruments
in an autoclave or dry-heat sterilizer kills all potential disease-causing
agents that might remain after patient treatment. All heat-stable instruments
that are exposed to a patient's blood are processed in this manner, including
the dental drill. Any instruments that cannot tolerate high temperatures
should be thoroughly cleaned and soaked in disinfectant chemicals.
Instruments used for surgery, including tooth extraction, are heat sterilized
and they are be stored in a sterile wrap or container until they are used.
We are now using an autoclaving machine, a dental sterilizer that processes
instruments faster and more effectively than ever before. In autoclaving,
instruments (which are first cleaned, dried, and placed in a special steam-penetrable
wrap), are subjected to pressurized steam for 15 to 20 minutes. The instruments
are then left in their protective packaging until they are needed.
Types of Implants, instruments, equipments .etc used in our surgical procedures
are sterilized and inspected before and after every procedure to ensure they
perform a 100%
